Oleh Bisma Indar Ekalaya

We live in a society. And to understand the society, we do need to know the literature. By understanding the literature, we are going to get involved in community more easily.

Why did I stated like that? It simply because being a part of community, it means that we will, whether direct or indirectly learn the culture around us. It’s because literature and culture are two things that cannot be get separated at all. Both of it were supporting each other. And combining of those two will inevitable make something new and with a bigger scale, which we call as civilization.

By studying the culture, we will get understand what’s happening in our environment nowaday. In another word, society forms the literature trough its culture in every environment. Because of that, people itself are the part of literature and culture. So, that’s why we do need learn the literary work because, as a human we do must understand ourself and another human being. In many literary work, we could it, every positive things, every problem, every secret, every joyfulness are described really well in literary work. That’s the point, we should read to understand.

The Lake of Innesfree Poem Analysis

The Lake of Innisfree

by William Butler Yeats

The Lake of Innisfree is a poem which tell about a man who dreams about a perfect place where he could get a peace in live. According to some resources based on the internet, Innisfree is a region which still untouched by industries, and that’s why the speaker tend to describe it as his perfect place to live. We could find it in line 7 and 8:

There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow

And evening full of the linnet's wings.

From these lines we could feel how is the speaker’s imagination towards Inisfree, and how bad he would like to go there. We will spotted some identical lines, in very first line, and the ninth line where the speaker keep saying that he ‘will arise, and go to Innesfree’. But in the ninth line, he said ‘I will arise and go now, for always night and day’. From this line, we can speculate that he could not go right now, but he kept dreaming for it, day and night. Maybe it because he live in urban, and have many things to be done, such as his job and works, family matters, and another adult business in common.

The speaker is a worker, maybe a busy worker of some company. Because, he do really imagine the peaceful life in Innesfree despites his routine in city. The tone of this poem are interesting, it inviting us feeling the warm of the speaker’s imagination about Innesfree.
